In 1975, as a college sophomore, a new immigrant and not yet settled on a major, I visited the Sheldon Art Museum in Lincoln Nebraska. One of the great works of art that enchanted me during every visit was the simple beauty of a 1/2 life-size nude titled “Diana”. It was sculpted in 1899 by one of America’s premier sculptors and one of the founders of the National Sculpture Society, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. He is perhaps best known for his Double Eagle American gold coin. Diana was first commissioned as an eighteen-foot sculpture to top the tower of Madison Square Gardens and went through several transformations. For years I desired to pursue my own interpretation of this classical subject. 112 years after Saint-Gaudens’, my Diana began its life as a simple 1/3 life-size study of my good friend and model, Amanda. In 2004 I began working on the life-size version. Something clicked during the early months of 2006 and the sculpture began to emerge as a new idealized figure. The pursuit of excellence and beauty has been my hallmark throughout my career. The definition of fine art, with emphasis on “fine”, is the continual refinement of a concept, a form or a line until it reaches a level of sublime beauty that words fail to describe it. As I look at the now finished sculpture, it gives me such a complete sense of satisfaction. Without a doubt, it represents my best figurative work ever. You may have noticed the different surface treatment. Based on discussions with my patina artist, this type of texture will be most effective at allowing the sculpture to retain its soft appearance. Diana represents an end of an era. For a variety of reasons this will be my last life-size nude. Further, it is being offered as a very limited edition of six copies plus one artist proof.
Two methods to order: * There are two more nudes in progress currently, but one is half life-size and the other is 1/3 life-size. Private, one-of-a-kind commissions may still be accepted. Please contact our studios for details.
